I love bringing the surreal to my writing. My work is often set within the modern world with everyday characters, who have no superpowers or sword wielding skills.
I’ve often found that bringing the surreal to a contemporary setting can act as an effective change of pace. It has the advantage of capturing the reader’s attention and taking him/her on a journey where they have no idea where they are going, or what will happen when they get there.
In the past I’ve used dreams as a trigger to shift my story. The reader moves from a normal contemporary scene to the middle of a dark, menacing, and foreboding world. The normal rules don’t apply, the character could act completely out of character, die even.
